First Black military pilot
Born in Izmir in 1883. His maternal grandmother had been brought to Turkey from Bornu, in what is now Nigeria. He began cadet training at the Naval Flight School at Yeşilköy in 1914 and graduated on 11 November 1916, months before Eugene Bullard earned his wings in France.
